Marinsky Theatre

Marinsky Theatre
2014
Architect:
Diamond Schmitt Architects

The auditorium was carefully designed with attention to acoustics, sightlines, and audience comfort, providing both artists and spectators with an unprecedented experience that complements the international stature of the Mariinsky Opera, Ballet, and Orchestra. This project required a custom-made chair, crafted according to the designer’s specifications and featuring optimal acoustic performance, which led to the development of the Demetra series.

The VIP area is finished with beech wood panels, leather walls, and a Swarovski chandelier.

The building, covering 79,114 m², is one of the largest theaters and concert venues in the world. The auditorium can accommodate up to 1,830 people at full capacity. The new theater has seven above-ground floors and three underground levels. It includes the main stage, a rehearsal stage, and backstage areas; rehearsal rooms for the ballet company, opera company, and orchestra; facilities for 1,000 employees; dressing rooms and foyer spaces hosting educational programs for children and young people; a rooftop amphitheater hosting the Stars of the White Nights festival; and an underground parking area for staff.

Adjacent to the historic Mariinsky Theatre building, built in 1860, and the Concert Hall inaugurated in 2006, Mariinsky II is part of this unique theater and concert complex, distinguished for its artistic and educational capacities. This complex has reinforced the Mariinsky Theatre’s status as one of the world’s most important cultural institutions.
